ΣΥΜΦΩΝΩ ΑΠΟΛΥΤΑ για αυτό και η ...."αντιγραφή" It’s not often that you get to feel proud after being defeated, but that’s what I am today. People told me last night that we had around 30% possession, but I don’t believe that for one second; there’s no way it was above 10%. Somehow, when we come up against a team who are set out only to defend, we are weak for not being able to break them down. All the possession in the world is no good if you don’t put it in the back of the net, isn’t that what we hear week in week out? Well, here’s the thing, with 30 minutes left in a three hour contest, Arsenal were ahead 3-2 and going through. Then the ref sent off RVP. It’s not like we’ve been stronger in the last 20 minutes against Barca or anything like that. I’ll get to the sending off later. Defending, we are always reminded, is just as much a part of football as attacking. Birmingham last week weren’t lucky that their keeper kept them in the Carling Cup final, oh no, they were resolute and defended heroically. That’s what we did last night, We defended as if our lived depended on it, yet somehow we get no credit. It’s all about how we couldn’t live with Barcelona. Unless I’m mistaken, we lived with them perfectly well until Van Persie was sent off. They might have had literally all the possession, but it means fuck all if you can’t put it in the net. We hear that every time we fail to win. Hell, we even hear that when we do win because we should have scored more. Every single week we have to listen to pundits talk about how wasteful we are and deride us for choosing to pass instead of shoot. Barcelona? Well they are lauded for it. Some pundits have said that the refereeing didn’t change the game, that VP’s red card didn’t matter because Barcelona were always going to win anyway. Really? Just like they won at the Emirates after battering us for 60 minutes? Interesting. The fact that 13 of their 19 efforts came after the red card seems to have escaped them. Is that REALLY how football works? Does the superior team who has all the possession ALWAYS win the match? You and I both know the answer to that. So the fact that even though we had managed to hold on until late in the game and then hit Barca on the counter in previous meetings means nothing. I’m not saying we would have won it, I’m not saying we deserved to win it, what I am saying, however, is that we had the chance of winning it, against all odds, despite only having about three touches of the ball all evening. When Barca got their second I saw the heart of our team sink, they knew that holding on and facing extra-time with 10 men was now impossible. By the end of the match, despite Almunia not knowing why players weren’t running about trying to get a goal, they were literally dead on their feet. That much is clear, surely we can understand that? The sending off, then the second goal simply knocked the stuffing out of us. A level playing field, just once, that’s all I wanted. Oh right, we got that in the first leg and what happened? We won. The only time we have played them without having our first team crippled or a red card and we won. Huh. So he team return to London and count the cost of another date with Barca. Cesc has done his hamstring, and if the reports are true that he felt it go after 15 minutes then his decision to stay on the pitch was incredibly selfish. Not only did it diminish us on the night, but it could jeopardise our title chances. What was up with Cesc last night? Well, as much as I love him, I think he was too focused on being friends with Barca before the match, and too determined to show-off to the crowd during it. It was not a captain’s display at all, but some of the hate aimed at him from so-called Arsenal fans disgusts me. Of course he shouldn’t have tried to back-heel it on the edge of our box, but do you actually think he wanted them to score from it? Chesney may or may not have ruptured a tendon in his finger. If he has, then we play the rest of the season with our third choice keeper. Who we will put on the bench I’m not sure as Shea is out on loan. Can Mannone be recalled? Can’t we just play fly-nets? Sidebar on Almunia: To offer any criticism of Almunia after last night’s performance based on previous experience would be petty in the extreme, however, I do feel the need to answer those who flooded to me at the final whistle with demands of ‘what do you think of Almunia now’ and ordering me to take back everything I’ve ever said about him. Well, I’m simply not going to do that. Just as I will never write a player off because of a single bad match, I am not going to change my opinion on a player who had one good match. It’s the same argument which I had with those who insisted because Almunia had one great half against Barcelona last year he had to be a great keeper. One good half means nothing if every other half you play is awful. Play consistently well, or a

We gave our all and were beaten by circumstances and a better team. There is no shame in that. It is rare in football that things are that simple, but today they are. Barcelona are a magnificent side against whom every team in England would struggle and likely get a pasting. It is a real shame, however, that, they show less class in victory, than they did in defeat three weeks ago. Some Barcelona post-match quotes from @Barcastuff: Xavi: “I expected more from Arsenal. They had almost no chance, we scored their goal. They didn’t want to play, only defend.” Xavi: “The result is just. We’ve been very superior both in London as here. Football justice.” Alves: “Van Persie should already have been sent off in the first half for hitting me in the face.” Alves: “They came here to defend the 2-1, but 90 minutes is a long time. We have our philosophy and we’ll die with it.” Iniesta: “Everyone has its own side of the story. In the first game we were also badly treated by the referee but we decided not to comment” Guardiola: “Arsenal couldn’t give 3 passes, we put pressure in great way.” Rosell (president): “We suffered a lot, but at the end it makes the victory sweeter. We’re proud.” Abidal: “Van Persie red card decisive? Of course it had an influence but the players should stick to the rule too” Really Abidal? Is this in the rules too? Or what about this? Would love to know where in the rules it says you are to be booked for kicking the ball at goal (because you think play is still live) ONE second after the whistle goes is a bookable offence. You may be the best team on the planet, but you are also a bunch of diving cheats who get away with murder on the pitch. Not one single yellow card for a Barcelona player, despite grabbing two Arsenal players by the throat, a late tackle from Alves on Cesc and a scissor tackle on Nasri. Sure, they could have had a penalty, but I’m pretty sure, two reds for the throats grabs, and Alves getting the two yellows he deserved plus Van Persie staying on the pitch might just have swung the game our way – 11 v 8? Yeah, you bitch about the referee. To the Spuds fans who think it’s funny that we lost to Barcelona and that they lasted in the Champions League longer than us I really don’t know what to say. How stupid can you be to gloat over staying in one day longer simply because of the way the fixtures are scheduled. Part of me really hopes you get through tonight, and you get Barcelona in the next round. Then we’d REALLY see humiliation. So what happens now? Well, defeat can knock a team down, but the manner in which we lost should do nothing but fire this Arsenal team up. I said yesterday that as long as we gave everything I would have no complaints. We were beaten by a better side who were helped by the referee, I have no issue with Arsenal, no problem with Wenger, and what happened last night might be just the tonic to push us on in the league and FA Cup. As long as we have players who can still stand that is. Proud of you Arsenal, no matter what others are saying. As Jamie said on Twitter yesterday, Arsenal before, Arsenal after. Always Arsenal. Now bring on those Mancs!
